Honoring Our Fallen Heroes
Javan Settles
EOW: December 19, 2024
Javan Settles became a proud member of the Ontario Professional Firefighters Association on February 17, 2023.
His journey into the fire service began after witnessing the tragic events of 9/11 while working in an office building in
New York. That day changed the course of his life, inspiring him to dedicate himself to a calling of service and
sacrifice.
In 2008, Javan joined the FDNY, where he served with honor at the “Big House,” Ladder 134 in Queens, New York.
His passion and commitment led him to California in 2012, where he became an invaluable member of the Long
Beach Fire Department, serving the community for a decade. After more than 15 years of exemplary service, Javan
brought his experience and leadership to the Ontario Fire Department in 2023.
Javan contributed far more than his extensive knowledge—he brought an unshakable pride in the fire service
brotherhood and a work ethic that set a standard for all. He exemplified what it meant to be a firefighter, inspiring
others with his contagious positivity and purposeful actions—both of which are deeply missed.
Javan is survived by his mother, father, girlfriend, his Long Beach and Ontario Fire Department families, and his two
beloved daughters. Not a day passed without Javan speaking with love and pride about his two “princesses.” His
unwavering dedication to being a strong, compassionate father was evident in everything he did.
His sudden passing has left a profound impact not only on Local 1430 but on the entire fire service. In his honor, we
are committed to upholding the legacy he leaves behind—through action, service, and remembrance.
You will forever be missed, Brother.
“No excuses, just results.” – FF Javan Settles
Curtis Gold
EOW: August 27, 2022
Curtis Gold became a proud member of the Ontario Professional Firefighters Association in February of 2016. He quickly earned a reputation as an exceptional firefighter, known for his critical thinking, dedication, and unwavering work ethic. Always striving for growth, Curtis became an active member of the USAR team, pursued paramedic school on his own initiative, and soon after, earned a promotion to Engineer.
In October 2021, Curtis married the love of his life, Taylor Gold. Together, they built a strong, loving partnership. Tragically, on August 27, 2022—just months before celebrating their first wedding anniversary—Curtis lost his life in an off-duty accident.
Within a week of his passing, Taylor learned she was expecting their child. On April 24, 2023, Taylor gave birth to a beautiful and healthy baby girl, a living reminder of Curtis’s love and legacy—his final gift.
Curtis leaves behind his devoted wife, their daughter, and his brothers at Local 1430, who continue to honor his memory with each passing day. Curtis’s impact on those around him will never be forgotten.
